It’s admirable when an MC can perform songs at high-paced tempos and complex wordplay without the assistance of a hypeman, I give props to people like Black Thought and C.L. Smooth for carrying on this tradition.

Reminiscing over Trouble T-Roy

Twenty years ago today (July 15) tragedy struck when hip-hop dance pioneer Troy “Trouble T-Roy” Dixon passed, following a freak accident while on tour in Indianapolis with his group, Heavy D & the Boyz. The Mt. Vernon native was only 22 at the time of his death. While casual rap fans may not think of him right away when listing the culture’s fallen soldiers, Troy’s name is ever present whether they realize it or not.

…, I feel Questlove and Jazzy Jeff were making a point to not only entertain, but to educate… and the outcome was phenomenal. They played everything- Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, The Pharcyde, Biggie, Kanye, Common, etc. and often played the original sample leading into the hip hop classic. Skillz served as hypeman for the occaison and did a great job getting the crowd involved without becoming overbearing. This is one rare gem you wont want to miss.

Some footage from Marco Polo’s “Stupendous Adventures of Marco Polo” release party, at which fellow Toronto producers Frank Dukes, Rich Kidd, and MoSS, as well as Marco himself, were asked to flip some well-known samples. Frank Dukes tackles Seals & Croft’s “Summer Breeze”, Marco works with Al Be Sure’s “Night and Day”, MoSS manages to make The Bee Gees “Stayin’ Alive” sound gully (no joke), and Rich Kidd gives Melanie Fiona’s “It Kills Me” his own personal twist.
