Fat Joe performs classics at his album release party

In celebration of the release of his 10th solo album, The Darkside Vol. 1, the Terror Squad leader urged any fans expecting to hear the radio friendly “Lean Back,” “Make It Rain” and “We Thuggin’” to exit the club. Instead Joe ran through an assortment of his underground classics for a performance. After starting off with ‘Heavenly Father” — the Lil Wayne-assisted cut off of his new album, Joe tore through his tried and true catalog. He rocked songs like 1993’s “Flow Joe,” ‘Firewater,” “Success” and “Shit is Real (Remix),” “John Blaze,” ‘My Lifestyle” and “Gangsta.”

In tribute to his fallen protégé Big Pun, Joe invited Joell Ortiz to help with “Deep Cover (Twinz ’98).” Joell’s homage paying performance opened the floodgates for more special guests as Cook Coke Crack rocked with Redman , Diamond D, M.O.P., Buckshot, Jeru Da Damaja and Public Enemy’s S1Ws who danced to an intro for Joe’s latest P.E.-inspired single “No Problems.”

ODB Feat. N.O.R.E. – Dirt McGirt

When we were putting together The IN Crowd mixtape, we knew we wanted to include one of the productions J. Cardim contributed to ODB’s posthumous album around 2005/2006. We ended up going with “All Of The Time” (track 11 on The IN Crowd) but we wanted to let the people hear the other one.
Our friend Dame Grease also produced an early version of this song and can be heard doing ad-libs on the chorus.
It’s a shame this music didn’t come out when it should have, R.I.P. to one of Hip-Hop’s greatest artists & characters.

Directed by Terence Nance, the “Something to Believe,” addresses the detachment we all battle when faced with the the world’s overwhelming issues. “It’s hard to think about all the problems in the world without getting a little overwhelmed. So, a lot of times we just ignore things. I think Africa has suffered a lot because people choose to remain ignorant, rather than address the issues that are right in front of our faces,” Blitz said.

Filmed over a three month period this past winter, “Something to Believe,” was an epic undertaking. Snow storms, scheduling conflicts, and an ambitious treatment, made for a grueling process. The end result is thanks in full to a dedicated cast and crew.

Just 10 days after the US celebrated its birthday, there was another testament to the power of independence as Duck Down presented its 15th Anniversary Concert at BB King Blues Club in NYC Times Square on July 13th. Duck Down artists Team Facelift, Ruste Juxx, Marco Polo, Torae, Skyzoo, Kidz In the Hall, Pharoahe Monch, and the mighty Boot Camp Clik featuring Buckshot, Sean Price, Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, Black Moon) graced the stage performing their classic hits. Hosts Angela Yee and Amanda Diva kept the show moving smoothly, while DJ Evil Dee provided music throughout the evening.

Special guest performers during the evening included Large Professor, !llmind, Stalley, Donnis, Daru, Jean Grae, Styles P, DJ Boogie Blind, Mela Machinko, Pete Rock, Tony Touch, Immortal Technique, Masta Ace, and Talib Kweli.

Mayer Hawthorne – I Need You

While touring the world it seems that Mayer Hawthorne also found the time to join forces with Nottz recording his new song I Need You. In good Stones Throw-manner the piece comes as a 12″ also containing an etching by Miami illustrator Freegums.

Mayer Hawthorne explains the story behind this record:

I met Nottz at Nightlife’s Dilla Tribute in L.A. and we just kept in contact. I had always been a fan of Nottz since the 90s. He sent me a bunch of beats and at first I had no idea what to do with any of them, but eventually it hit me. I sang a hook for him on his album as well.

The song is a cover of a cat named Otis Leavill which is one of my all time fav soul sides, but relatively unknown 45. I don’t think Nottz even knew it. I actually even made up some of the words because no one could make out what he said in the original. ha!

When Nottz sent me that batch – that particular beat stood out. It had the same chord progression as the Otis Leville, so I just went with it.

Rah Digga returns with a “Classic”

Highly regarded as one of the best female emcees to ever rip a mic, Rah Digga is set to return after a DECADE with her sophomore album, Classic, on September 14th.

After years of riding with Busta Rhymes and his Flipmode Squad, her debut solo album (2000′s Dirty Harriet), and an unproductive stint at J Records (whom shelved her 2004 album Everything Is a Story), Digga finally decided to strike out on her own and secured herself a deal with NY-based, independent label Raw Koncept. It was this deal that also led her to the album’s sole producer, hip-hop veteran Nottz (Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West).

“It’s all Nottz production and all Rah Digga rhyming,” she told XXL Magazine back in March. Although it wasn’t their first time working together (Nottz produced five tracks on Dirty Harriet), Digga relates, “Lucas [from Raw Koncept] said you need to let Nottz do the whole album. And we argued and went back and forth, you know, I just couldn’t see it at the time…As we started recording, by the time I got to that tenth song, it got to the point where I couldn’t even hear anybody else on the album.”

With just those 10 tracks, Classic is a gritty display of boom bap beats mixed with Digga’s rugged rhymes. While the title could be considered an audacious move after years of silence, she couldn’t help but give the album a title that it deserves.

“I named it that because to me, it’s classic hip-hop at its finest, what everybody misses and what everybody claims they wish they heard more of,” she told hip-hop blog The BoomBox. “It’s just straight raw rhymes, raw beats, not saturated with guest appearances–it’s just authentic hip-hop.

“It’s definitely an album that [fans] can appreciate and has that classic ’90s hip-hop that everybody misses or you just don’t really get to hear on a mainstream level…If it achieves mainstream success, I’m all for it. But I’m not compromising my sound or my style to do it on purpose.”

Gangrene (Alchemist & Oh No) – Chain Swinging

Famed producer/emcee The Alchemist and left-coast rapper/beatsmith Oh No are collaborating as Gangrene to bring audiences their gritty opus Gutter Water this October on Decon Records. Over the course of three years and a myriad of emails, the two have built a project that celebrates their shared passion for dusty breaks and lurid wordplay as well as their distinctly different application of each.

Oh No and The Alchemist share production duties on Gutter Water, while trading verses over each others dense compositions. Both find themselves remarkably at ease amongst the threatening drums pounded out on endearing vintage equipment, flipping verses that run the gamut from literal to abstract, amounting to an incredible collection of head-nodders. Features include Raekwon, Guilty Simpson, Big Twins, Evidence, Roc C, MED, Twins Gambino, Planet Asia and Fashawn.
