Red Bullova glazbena akademija proputovala je čitav svijet. Bila je u Berlinu, Torontu, Londonu, Madridu, Melbourneu i Cape Townu, a ove godine ide preko ‘velike bare’ – u New York!

Grad ovjekovječen u mnogim glazbenim brojevima kolijevka je mnoštva glazbenih trendova, pokreta i žanrova koji su se upravo iz ‘Velike jabuke’ širili diljem svijeta. Očaravajuća atmosfera New York još uvijek čini gradom u kojemu je sve moguće pa se u njega, među ostalima, slijevaju i glazbenici iz čitavog SAD-a, a i šire.

Red Bull Music Academy poziva glazbenike iz čitavoga svijeta da se prijave za sudjelovanje na novom glazbenom putovanju koje će trajati pet tjedana i biti prepuno radionica, koncerata, klupskih nastupa i mnogih drugih glazbom inspiriranih događaja, a sve će se to odvijati u gradu koji nudi bezbroj mogućnosti, gradu punom raznolikosti i bogatom kulturnim i glazbenim naslijeđem koje svima može poslužiti kao inspiracija.

“I’m not the best motherfucker, but I’m better than a lot of n*ggas,” the grand imperial Lord Finesse once famously, succinctly remarked on record. While one would expect such swift hubris would apply to the Funky Man’s acumen for punchline-heavy braggadocio verses, it actually resounds three-fold. For Finesse is that true rarity amongst hip-hoppers: a revered and celebrated emcee who also boasts equally prodigious talents as a DJ and producer.

Despite classic rap efforts to his credit like 1990’s Funky Technician, it’s been Finesse’s fine work behind the console that’s kept him most active between extended breaks on the mic. Often characterized by dark, reverb-soaked horns, forgotten jazz riffs, propulsive drums, and those signature sleigh bells, his productions have naturally punctuated the efforts of his brethren in the D.I.T.C. (Diggin’ In the Crates) collective – Show & AG, Fat Joe, O.C., and his protégé, the late, great Big L. But he’s also helmed the beats for “Suicidal Thoughts,” off The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die, and “The Message” from Dr. Dre’s 2001 album. Both are classic Finesse in terms of sound and feel; both round out their respective albums with emotionally resonant tracks that show their architect’s musical range.

With his recent mixtapes, Art Of Diggin’ Vol. 1 & 2, “The Underboss” continues to display his knack for picking the right records to utilize. And though it’s been 17 years since his last LP of new raps, 2012 promises a resurgence of Finesse through a slew of both original and archival material via Slice-Of-Spice Records. Sounds like the perfect time then, to consult the Funky Technician for his all-time favorite (rather funky) sample flips.

According to TMZ, Soul Train creator Don Cornelius, was found dead in his home from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was 75.

Don Cornelius was an American television show host and producer who is best known as the creator of the nationally syndicated dance/music franchise Soul Train, which he hosted from 1971-1993.

Today, a spokesperson from veteran Los Angeles Hip Hop trio Cypress Hill revealed to HipHopDX that the act is at work on a collaborative EP with Dubstep producer Rusko. Titled Cypress x Rusko, the EP will release later this year.

Cypress emcees B-Real and Sen Dog worked with Rusko, a fan of the early ’90s veterans, for over six months. The five-song EP is entirely produced by the English-born Rusko, who has previously worked with and remixed the likes of Kid Cudi, Kid Sister and Gucci Mane.

March 9, 2012, marks the 15-year anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death and XXL is paying tribute to the late, great Brooklyn MC with a special issue dedicated to his legacy.

Similar to the honorary issue dedicated to Tupac Shakur and the 15th anniversary of his passing, released by XXL in September of 2011, the XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.

Even though the issue is a Big tribute there’s much more in the mag to look forward to. It’s been 15 years since 1997, arguably the best year in hip-hop music, and XXL explores that very notion with a detailed essay.

The last we heard of First Serve it was 3am in a Parisian suburb at an out of control house party with ‘The Goon Time Mixtape’ blasting into the night. That was just a taste of things to come from De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present ‘First Serve’; a dynamic hip-hop group, an album, a concept, the soundtrack to a movie that has yet to be made and a fable for our times.

‘First Serve’ is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2 / Dave) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (aka Plug 1/ Pos), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, “different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do.” Their name ‘First Serve’ comes from their motto, “First come, First Serve, get what you deserve.”

Due to hit the streets in April 2012 (4-2-2012), the ‘First Serve’ album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’ and their hard work and persistence finally pays off. As we know that is rarely where the story ends and the story of ‘First Serve’ is no different. Taking place in an animated world that could have been imagined by Hawley Pratt on Magic Mushrooms, the high spirited and often hilarious journey is pure old school hip-hop; skits, disco, beats, funk, quips, burns and hustlin’ all included.

We have received word from readers this evening that legendary singer and songwriter Jimmy Castor, known for his funky — and funny — hits during the 70s, has died. As the leader of the Jimmy Castor Bunch, he topped the charts with such cuts as the humorous “Troglodyte (Cave Man)” and “The Bertha Butt Boogie.”

Castor started as a singer and saxophonist in New York, and first appeared as a session man for Frankie Lymon, for whom he also wrote the hit “I Promise to Remember.” But it was his solo work and work leading the Jimmy Castor Bunch that won fans all over the world. Other hits included “King Kong,” “Potential” and “Hey Leroy, Your Mama’s Callin’ You,” with many of his songs being later sampled by hip-hop artists.

Even long after his hitmaking days were over, Castor continued to perform around the world, pleasing fans with his unique style of funk and dance music. He will be missed.

IN MEMORIAM: BRANIMIR ‘BRANE’ KOŠTAN aka DJ BRONSON

VAROŠ – BAČVICE – QUEENS…

Čini se kao da se ona izreka da najbolji odlaze prvi prečesto ponavlja u zadnje vrijeme. Zlokobna floskula uvijek zazvuči još bolnije kada ode netko mlad i uistinu poseban, neumoran, pozitivan, nezamjenjiv. Mi ovdje nećemo pretjerivati, reći ćemo sve kako je bilo jer je već to dovoljno da se shvati koliko velik i dobar čovjek je bio naš prijatelj Brane.

Rođen u Splitu krajem 70-tih Branimir Koštan se odselio u New York početkom 90-tih taman na vrijeme da uhvati zlatno doba hip hopa na koji se odmah navukao. Tijekom 14 godina boravka u Americi gdje je diplomirao management i poduzetništvo počinje se aktivnije baviti glazbom i stjecati brojne kontakte. Iz tog vremena potječe i njegov poznati, proznatljivi stage name – DJ Bronson. Svoju ljubav prema hip hopu i glazbi općenito prenio je natrag u Hrvatsku gdje se odmah po dolasku uključuje u tada već razvijenu scenu. Postaje član ili suradnik poznatih izvođača, kolektiva i DJ-a poput Blackouta, Dječaka, OneIIManyja, Odiea, Marvela, Sinesteta, Olija, xStatic Festivala, Haciende, hip-hop.hr-a, booker.hr-a, Bum Squad DJz-a, Foundation Rap Showa… Već ove činjenice govore u prilog da je hip hop scena u Dalmaciji, Hrvatskoj, ali i cijeloj regiji bila potpuno nezamisliva bez Braneta.

Iznimna strast za glazbom, naprekidan rad, podrška znanim i neznanim artistima za Braneta su bili obavezni čak i u zadnjim danima kad ga je bolest prikovala za krevet. Pisali su o tome splitski Dječaci, bend kojima je bio DJ na prvim nastupa i vozio iz uzduž i poprijeko Hrvatske i BiH u svom autu boje trule višnje. Uz teške bolove, dok mu je u bolnici sestra davala morfij, hvalio im je album i bio sretan zbog koncerata i kritika. Govori o tome i Phat Phillie za kojeg su ga puno puta zamjenili i koji ga je smatrao svojim mlađim bratom. “Uvijek smo pričali samo o muzici, to ga je najviše interesiralo. Tko je objavio album, kakav je bio party, koja nam je sljedeća destinacija za svirku…” – napisao je u dirljivom tekstu Phillie uz obećanje da će Branetovo ime “biti zapisano najsvjetlijim slovima u analima domaće hip-hop scene i da sve što radi od sad nadalje radi u njegovu čast.”

Teško bi se takve riječi izrekle za nekog tko uz sve nije bio i prijatelj, a Brane je bio duša od čovjeka. Voljen i poštovan, topao i nesporedan, osoba koju biste uvijek htjeli uz sebe. As Coalmine Records five-year anniversary campaign comes to an end, the Brooklyn-based boutique is pleased to release their latest digital single titled “Real Talk” from heavyweight spitter, Torae. “Real Talk” is produced by underground beatsmith Young Cee, who has crafted tracks for the likes of Scarface, Little Brother, Edo G, Special Teamz and Krumbsnatcha, among others.

The first rap battle of 2012 is officially in full swing and “Sway in the Morning” on Shade 45 and RapFix has the exclusive. Rumblings of a Common and Drake back and forth began to surface after the Chi-town MC dropped his single “Sweet” back in November, ranting about soft MCs. A month later Com admitted that Drake (and other soft rappers) was a target and on Friday Drizzy fired back lyrically with his verse on Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’.” Now, Common has responded on “Stay Schemin (Remix),” a track that debuted Monday on Sway Calloway’s “Sway in the Morining.”

“He opened his mouth and said some things, so if that’s what he want—all that subliminal [talk]…you could do that too, but say it now,” Common told Sway when the MTV News correspondent and Shade 45 radio host asked if “Sweet” was directed at the Young Money stand-out. “The verse is about me but when you hear some of the stuff on the chorus it’s like you can’t help but think about dude and I guess that’s what he felt. So at the end of day he fits in that category, he already embraced it, so wear it.”

On “Stay Schemin’” Drake fired back at an unnamed foe, a foe many believe to be Common. “Don’t be duckin’ like you never wanted nothin’/ It’s feelin’ like rap changed it was a time it was rugged/ Back when if a n—a reached it was for the weapon/ Nowadays n—as reach just to sell their record,” Drake spit.

Common hasn’t been the only one throwing shots at the Toronto MC. Com’s G.O.O.D. Music running mate Pusha T has also been involved in a battle of subliminals with Drake. Both Push and Common have recently released projects, though it is plausible that Drizzy’s bars were more directly aimed at Com, seeing as how “Sweet” came out a little more than a month before Common’s The Dreamer,The Believer LP.
