Dancing In The Street: Planet Rock (1995)

This is episode 9 of the 1995 BBC TV documentary series called Dancing in the Street: A Rock & Roll History (As Told By The People Who Made It), which focuses on electronic music. It’s a well worth spent hour profiling primarily the emergence of hip-hop and other genres like techno and house. We get to hear from Bambaataa on the significance of Kraftwerk, Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin discuss the rise of Def Jam, and the Beastie Boys share their thoughts about the early days and recall the PMRC censorship battles of the ’80s. Later, there’s a visit to Long Island to chat with the great De La Soul about the perils of sampling and Maseo demonstrates how to use the MPC.
