At 22, Bilal Oliver’s debut album “1st Born Second” showed the maturity of an artist light years beyond his young age, earning the adoration of new fans and seasoned music vets alike. His vocal range had no bounds, and his production tore down pre-conceived notions of what R’n’B and soul at the time should sound like.
Despite label red tape and crafty bootlegging, Bilal’s “Love For Sale” reached fans’ ears and strengthened his fan base to rabid cult status. His latest LP, “Airtight’s Revenge,” is more than a collection of crooner’s tales, but also touches on politics, the music industry, and his young son living with autism.
To celebrate Bilal’s show for Manifesto, I put together a “Best Of…” mix showcasing one of the purest artists working today. From his breakout hits and standards, to his ubiquitious guest appearances, and his legendary slow burners, Bilal has created a body of work that deserves a king’s ransom Yet, he remains a loyal servant to the craft of making timeless music. A pure artist, indeed.
