Flying Lotus ft. Kendrick Lamar – Eyes Above (Full Version)

Flying Lotus

Pumping up his BBC Radio 1 residency to epic proportions, Flying Lotus shared the full version of his You’re Dead! track “Eyes Above,” which features a blistering verse from Kendrick Lamar (just as it was always meant to be). Lamar was FlyLo’s guest on last night’s BBC program, and the two engaged in lively conversation about what it means to make music in 2015 and, or course, Lamar’s instant-classic To Pimp A Butterfly LP.

The new take on “Eyes Above” was shared as a kind of token of the mutual respect and bond between the two artists. A previous version–one with no Kendrick–was released on Flying Lotus’s 2014 psych-hip-hop-jazz opus, but as the producer explained in an interview, it was only for political reasons that we were given that one and not the proper K dot cut. The wait was worth it however, as Kendrick’s verse comes across like a blistering break from the exhaustive narrative to TPAB. It’s already refreshing to hear new Lamar bars, and obviously a joy to have them riding atop the sinister work of Flying Lotus and bassist Thundercat. FlyLo will be on tour in Europe this spring with a list of dates that includes a massive blow-out gig at London’s O2 arena featuring MF Doom. If that wasn’t enough, Flying Lotus also shared new Thundercat and and, yes Funkadelic material during his broadcast, which you can listen to in full here. But first, hear “Eyes Above” ft. Kendrick Lamar below and be on guard–more magic is surely just around the corner.
