During an interview at the Tribeca Film Festival, Baz Luhrmann spoke on Nas’ involvement in his Netflix ’70s hip hop drama “The Get Down”. He is calling the rapper “a huge creative force” in shaping the aesthetic of the series, which follows struggling of South Bronx teens during the genesis of hip hop.

“One of the great collaborations is that I’ve been working really closely in creating these rhymes, and he’s a producer on the film, with one of the most iconic voices of the ‘90s and that’s Nas,” Luhrmann said. “And so Nas has been this other huge creative force in the production. And it’s been playing really, really successfully.”

The “Get Down” stars Daveed Diggs, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen Guardiola, Tremaine Brown Jr., and more. The show is scheduled to premier August 12th on Netflix.

“We weren’t sure about it when we began, and we couldn’t do without it now,” Luhrmann said. “And NAS has been fantastic in that regard.”
