DJ Eclipse:

Radio shows like this show me just how much Hot 97 has changed since the 90s. In addition to all the other great mix shows Hot hosted during that time, they also made sure to shine light on the pioneers that birthed this culture of Hip Hop. The Furious Five’s “Mic Check Show” came on Sunday nights from 10pm-11pm right before “Future Flavas”. The premise of the show was to take callers and let them freestyle live on air followed by a “yay” or “nay” response from whoever was hosting that particular night.

Caz, Breez and Creole were the hosts this night with Tony Touch on the turntables. Mr. Magic and Fly Ty from Cold Chillin‘ were also in the place and got on the mic for a bit. The hosts themselves made sure to show NYC how it’s properly done by spiting some verses (25:10). Fly Ty even took to the mic to spit a familiar verse (46:58) that many G Rap fans will recognize. One of the many callers that night was Freestyle from The Arsonists (34:43) who got an 8.5 from Magic himself.
