Video: A Tribe Called Red – R.E.D.

Yasiin Bey is escaping his legal troubles in South Africa by taking a spiritual journey. A Tribe Called Red’s new music video for “R.E.D.” plays off the real life events of Bey’s detainment for allegedly violating South African immigration law. Fellow featured artist Narcy – who also directs the video – acts as the former Mos Def’s guide in some desert travels to break free of confinement and connect with the Halluci Nation.

“It was an absolute honor for my directorial debut to be for artists as important and integral to the story of the world as A Tribe Called Red and Yasiin Bey,” Narcy said. “This time capsule and visual to R.E.D. is about one man finding himself, and reconnecting with Planet Earth. As an emissary of the Halluci Nation, I arrive to guide him back to himself, so he can find us again. It is the story of breaking ground, finding light and faith. It is about the power of our ancestors and the power of us. It is the beginning. The Callers of Names want us to forget, but we know where we are from. And we know where we are headed. For Kanata. For Africa. For Arabia.”

This Yasiin Bey and Narcy collaboration will appear on A Tribe Called Red’s upcoming album We Are Halluci Nation which is due out on Sept. 16. The First Nation DJ trio’s new LP will also feature guest appearances by notable artists such as Saul Williams and Shad. You can pre-order the album now on iTunes.
